Residential and datacenter proxies solve different access problems. The better option depends on how important network context, location precision, request volume, and predictable infrastructure are for the work you are doing.
The network difference
Residential proxy addresses are associated with consumer internet service providers. That can make them a better fit for workflows where a request should resemble traffic from a particular market or ISP. Datacenter proxy addresses come from hosting providers and cloud networks, which generally makes the infrastructure easier to provision and manage at scale.
Neither category is automatically better. The useful question is whether the destination and workflow care about the type of network from which a request arrives.
Location and session control
If the task depends on a country, state, city, ZIP code, or ISP, confirm that the provider exposes those controls and that the requested locations are actually available. Residential pools often provide broader location context, but availability can vary by market.
For session behavior, decide whether each request can use a new IP or whether a stable endpoint is needed for a short workflow. Rotating sessions are useful for distributed public-data tasks; sticky sessions are often easier for stateful testing and account workflows.
Speed, scale, and cost
Datacenter proxies can offer consistent performance because the infrastructure is hosted in data centers with predictable network paths. Residential traffic can introduce more variation, but the network context may be more valuable than raw throughput for location-sensitive work.
Compare pricing models carefully. A pay-as-you-go residential plan charges for traffic, while a time-based lease charges for access to an endpoint during a defined window. The cheapest model on paper is not always the lowest operational cost for your specific request pattern.
A simple decision checklist
Choose residential when location and ISP context are central to the task, choose datacenter when predictable infrastructure and throughput are the priority, and test a small authorized workflow before committing to a large plan. Whichever type you choose, verify protocol support, authentication, rotation controls, and the provider’s acceptable-use rules.
